Esther Gimeno Ugalde

Esther Gimeno Ugalde holds a BA in Translation and Interpretation from Universitat Pompeu Fabra (German and English) and a PhD in Romance Philology from the University of Vienna, where she also completed a MA in European Studies. Currently, she works in the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Vienna, where she is preparing a habilitation thesis in the field of literary translation in the Iberian Peninsula and translation theory. From 2012 to 2013, she was a Max Kade Fellow at Harvard University (Department of Romance Languages and Literatures), and from 2013 to 2018 she worked as an Assistant Professor at Boston College. She has also been a visiting professor (“Vertretungsprofessorin”) at the Chair of Iberian Studies at Chemnitz University of Technology, Germany. She is a member of the Centro de Estudos Comparatistas at the University of Lisbon, where she leads the IberTranslatio group. Within the framework of this group’s work, she has co-organized three international symposia (Lisbon 2019, Vienna 2022, and Bilbao 2024) and various publications. She has conducted research stays as a visiting professor/researcher at Stanford University, Lisbon, NOVA de Lisboa, and the Austrian Academy of Sciences. She has also taught at the universities of Vienna, Fribourg, and Chemnitz (Germany), Boston College, and the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya. She was the editor of the International Journal of Iberian Studies during six years (2018-2023) and is currently an Executive member of the Association for Contemporary Iberian Studies.

Her research interests focus on Translation studies and Iberian studies and the intersection between both fields, areas to which she has devoted numerous works and initiatives. She is also interested in the study of self-translation, multilingualism in literature and film, the fictions of the translator (“transfiction”) in Iberian and Ibero-American literatures, and the reception of Catalan literature in Portugal. She is the author of the book La identidad nacional catalana. Ideologías lingüísticas entre 1833 y 1932 (Iberoamericana/Vervuert 2010) and co-editor of various volumes, including Iberian and Translation Studies: Literary Contact Zones (Liverpool UP 2021), Catalunya/Catalunha. Relacions literàries i culturals entre Catalunya i Portugal (Húmus/Onada Edicions 2013), etc. She has co-edited, among others, the issues “Writing and Translating within Iberian Literatures” (Rassegna iberistica, no. 46, 2023), “Translation, Publishing and Circulation in Contemporary Iberian Literatures” (Quaderns. Revista de Traducció, no. 31, 2024, in press), and “Catalan Cultural studies” (Journal of Romance Studies, 23.4, 2023, with Maria Dasca).
